County asks for building code change input–by Friday

Hawaii County wants input on proposed changes to the County’s Building Administrative Code from design and construction professionals.  And they are only giving until this Friday, June 4 at 4:30 p.m. to do it.

The Administrative Code also includes proposed changes to the Electrical and Plumbing Codes and the addition of a tiny homes appendix. Anybody interested has until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2020, to provide input via email to cohbuild@hawaiicounty.gov.

These amendments are proposed in response to the building and construction codes adopted by the State Building Council and are part of a phased overhaul of energy, building, electrical, plumbing, and outdoor lighting codes to meet modern construction standards. The County began this process last fall with proposed revisions to the County’s Energy Conservation Code, which subsequently became law when its amendments were adopted as part of the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code in Chapter 5 of the Hawai‘i County Code.

The next phase of the code overhaul focuses on a reorganization of the building and construction codes.

In order to help facilitate the process, submitted comments on proposed amendments should contain the following written information:

  • proposed code amendment (i.e., deletion / addition),
  • justification for the amendment(s), and
  • contact information for additional follow-up.
