8 new cases of COVID on O’ahu, 1 new out of state

The Hawaii State Department of Health reports there are 9 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest number in 5 weeks. One case is an out-of-state resident, and 8 cases are on O’ahu.   This brings the state’s total to 673.  The counting mechanism assigns a state resident to that state, even if they are not in the state when they contract COVID-19.

State Department of Health has not provided additional detail about the location nor origin of the cases.  On Friday, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said he believes we are going to see an uptick in COVID-19 cases because of people gathering two weeks ago over the Memorial Day weekend, not practicing distancing, and often not wearing masks.

As of a week ago, 480 people up to age 59 have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 172 people 60 and older.  Health officials say the greatest hospitalization rate has been in people 60 and older.

Hawaii News Now reported that 3 senior-living facility employees have contracted COVID-19.

*Positive cases include presumptive and confirmed cases, and Hawaii residents and non-residents; data are preliminary and subject to change. Note that CDC provides case counts according to states of residence.

Includes cases that meet isolation release criteria (Isolation should be maintained until at least 3 days (72 hours) after resolution of fever and myalgia without the use of antipyretics OR at least 10 days have passed since symptom onset, whichever is longer). (The cases that have died and one case that has left the jurisdiction have been removed from these counts).

One case is a Lanai resident whose exposure is on Maui Island and who will be remaining on Maui Island for the interim.
