Some are drinking bleach or cleaners to avoid COVID–don’t do it!

The CDC on Friday released the results of a study to find out why more people have been calling poison control centers because of exposure to cleaners and disinfectants.

The study showed that around 30% of  those calling had engaged in practices intended to fight the virus which causes COVID-19, but which are not recommended and could be dangerous:  washing food with bleach, applying household cleaning and disinfectants to skin, and inhaling or gargling with, inhaling, or drinking cleaners and disinfectants.

The study also asked about peoples’ understanding of proper practices.

The survey was conducted as an opt-in online survey with 502 adults in May, 2020.

The CDC has information on how to use bleach and other cleaners properly.
