U.S. passes 2 million cases, but Hawaii case count manageable

The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Thursday morning, June 11, at 7:33 a.m.:

Worldwide cases:  7,432,275    Worldwide deaths:  418,052

U.S. cases: 2,008,905     U.S. deaths: 113,209

According to the Dashboard, the United States has added 19,384 cases in the last 24 hours, and deaths attributed to COVID-19 have increased by 807.  These numbers are slightly below the average for the previous two weeks.  Worldwide, deaths increased by 5,307.

On Wednesday, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, emphasized there is much economic uncertainty, with the future spread of the virus being “unknowable.”  Although stocks rallied on Wednesday, this morning at 8 a.m. HST, the Dow was down around 1500 points.  CNBC analysts suggest this is likely based on the reality of future economic uncertainty, concerns over future unemployment, and concerns over several states showing an increase in cases and hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients.

In Hawaii, other than a number of case increases on O’ahu since last Friday–many being family clusters, per the State Department of Health–the case count is manageable, according to Lt. Gov. Dr. Josh Green.  There are 685 cumulative cases as of Wednesday, with 622 released from isolation.  L.G. Green says the state’s hospital capacity is sufficient to handle any surge in cases as the state reopens interisland travel on June 16, with a goal to reopen trans Pacific travel as soon as possible.
