State: 36 new COVID–1 Big Island, 1 Kaua’i, 34 O’ahu

The state has another day of double-digit increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases, at 36. Most are on O’ahu–36, plus one on the Big Island and on on Kaua’i.

The state now has a cumulative 1,130, with 840 now released from isolation and monitoring by the State Department of Health.

The Big Island’s cumulative case count is 97, with, according to the State Department of Health’s noon report, 8 people still being actively monitored.  This morning’s Hawaii County Civil Defense update said there are 9 active cases on the island, so one person might have been released between 8 a.m. and noon.

In a glimmer of good news, the death count in the state has not increased above the known 19, 6 in Maui County and 13 on O’ahu.  Part of that may be that more people under 60 are contracting COVID-19, and the percentage of people under 60 who need hospitalization is relatively low, between almost zero for those ages 1 to 19, 2% for those 20 to 39, and 9% for those 40 to 59. The hospitalization rate for those over 60 is around 32%, and out of the 1,130 cases in the state, the number of those over 60 is 243.

The State has been planning to reopen to out-of-state travel August 1 with a change in the 14-day quarantine, with none required if people choose to take a COVID-19 test before coming and can show negative results.  But the surge in COVID-19 cases on the mainland–more than 62,000 new cases in the 24 hours ending at 7:30 a.m. this morning, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard, has caused state leaders to reconsider the plan.  Governor David Ige and the four county mayors met yesterday and will meet again today to figure out how to proceed.  City and County of Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said today it’s critical for the decisions to be made soon about travel.
