Big Island COVID jumps up 3, state adds 22

Hawaii Island has 3 new cases of COVID-19, and the state’s increase since yesterday is 22.   According to State Department of Health, 12 cases on the island are active (according to Hawaii County Civil Defense on Tuesday morning, only 8 cases are active).    The state’s cumulative total case count is 1,264, with 921 people no longer being actively monitored.

Hawaii Island’s total cases are spread around the island.  State Department of Health has not released information about the location of new cases.  The State Health Director, Bruce Anderson, did acknowledge at Monday’s media briefing that Kona Community Hospital has a frontline health provider with COVID-19 after the hospital sent out a press release with the information.   Anderson said he presumed the hospital was notifying people who may possibly have been exposed.

This morning, New West Broadcasting received information that a woman who last a non-COVID-related injury was advised to get tested; she did, and she is positive for COVID-19 with no symptoms.  So it appears there may be more cases associated with the Kona Hospital case.  At the Monday briefing, Anderson said “I suspect we’re going to be looking at this situation for quite some time.” He said he expected to be reporting more on the Kona Community Hospital case in the next several days.

Neither Kaua’i or Maui County has any new cases.  O’ahu has 19 new cases, although one was removed from the O’ahu case count because of updated information.

No new deaths were reported.  There have been 22 deaths from COVID-19, the three most recent between last Friday and Sunday.

The increase in cases in the state plus the outbreaks on the mainland were contributing factors to Gov. David Ige’s decision to defer the change in the 14-day travel quarantine to September 1, originally planned for August 1.
