According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide cases increased by 218,634 in the last 24 hours, and 3,902 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported.
According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 54,629 cases in the last 24 hours, and deaths attributed to COVID-19 have increased by 422.
The United States has just over one quarter of all the cases in the world. Several states continue to have a surge in cases.
In Florida, Sunday marked the fourth day that cases reached more than 10,000 cases in a single day. And in Miami-Dade County, the ICU beds are at 130% of capacity. Florida has had a total of 5,072 deaths, with 90 reported in the last day, according to the Florida Health Department.
California had more than 9,000 new cases confirmed yesterday, and 33 out of 58 counties are flagged as not meeting thresholds for case counts, hospitalizations, and hospital capacity. Gov. Gavin Newsom will hold a press conference today at noon California time to discuss the latest on reopening.
Arizona had 1,559 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, but that’s a drop from previous days. And hospitalizations are ICU bed utilization is slightly down. The confirmed cases are at 145,183 and known deaths total 2,784, according to the daily report by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Texas is another state with surging cases and challenged hospital capacity. On Sunday, Governor Abbott announced that the U.S. Department of Defense has sent five U.S. Navy teams to four locations in South and Southwest Texas to help combat the spread of COVID-19.
In Hawaii, the case count is low in comparison to other states, with yesterday’s cumulative case count at 1,381 with 1,043 released from isolation.
As of Sunday, Hawaii Island had 113 cumulative cases with 13 active cases. The county’s biggest concern at this point appears to be several cases associated with Kona Community Hospital. The hospital previously announced that 3 employees had tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, one community member is known to have tested positive and had been at Kona Community Hospital, taking a child to the Emergency Room for a broken arm around July 8.
Today, Kona Community Hospital is retesting all of the direct patient care staff after testing every employee and all contractors last Thursday. The hospital said in that test round, 545 employees and contractors were tested with negative COVID-19 results, and 3 under review or not completed. The hospital also tested all 43 patients, 42 of whom were negative, with the one remaining having been hospitalized for COVID-19 for several days. In addition to today’s retesting of direct patient care staff, this Friday the entire staff and all contractors will be tested again.
On Saturday, Premier Medical Group conducted a community testing at West Hawaii Civic Center, but results are not yet known from that testing.
