Fresh produce Tues, meal Thurs this week at La’i’ōpua

Even as the Census Bureau released the results of its latest household survey showing that nationwide, 10.8% of Americans  lived in households where there was either sometimes or often not enough to eat in the previous 7 days, people on the Kona side of the island may pick up food every Tuesday and Thursday.

La’i’ōpua 2020 is offering a drive-through pickup of  fresh produce every Tuesday and a meal-in-a-bag for 6 to 8 every Thursday.

The drive through pickup is at 5 p.m., and will go until supplies are exhausted.  The La’i’ōpua 2020 Community Center is at 74-5210 Keanalehu Drive, just above Kealakehe High School.

This Thursday the meal is chicken long rice and lomi salmon.

The next Food Basket drive-through food pickups will be in August, starting Wednesday August 5 at Hilo’s Afook Chinen Auditorium.  The Food Basket is closed this week to give the staff a chance to breathe, having worked continuously since the start of the pandemic.  In the meantime, the Food Basket has posted a list of alternative food sources at hawaiifoodbasket.org, which is also where the August schedule is.
