State leaps to 207 (2 Big Island) but that includes missing data

The State Department of Health released a number for today’s new count of COVID-19 cases in the state that will shock people –207 — the highest number seen. But to put it into perspective, on Sunday, the State only reported 45 cases, because one of the labs in the state, Clinical Laboratories, had not reported all their data.  The state says that the case count includes cases that should have been reported on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1.

The state has 2,448 cumulative cases, with the number of active cases at 1,107.  Most of the cases are on O’ahu. O’ahu has a cumulative total of 2,083 cases, including its 198 new cases.  This morning, Kirk Caldwell announced that all gatherings, family members or not, inside or outside, are now limited to 10, after many of the cases were caused by people gathering in large groups without masks.  Additionally, all O’ahu bars are now closed for 3 weeks, and restaurants may no longer serve alcohol past 10 p.m.

Hawaii Island has two new cases.  At least one of those is related to mainland travel, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno.  The county’s only two active cases are those, and it’s not known if they are related to each other.

Maui County had 7 new cases, bringing its cumulative case count to 178, with 133 released from isolation.

Kaua’i County had no new cases.

Lt. Gov. Josh Green, M.D., spoke with New West Broadcasting’s Sherry Bracken on Monday morning prior to the numbers being released.  He is quite concerned that Gov. David Ige has acknowledged that State Department of Health, even last week, did not have enough contact tracers to manage this outbreak.  He said he was talking with Gen. Kenneth Hara of Hawaii Emergency Management this morning about getting National Guard personnel to help.  Listen to the complete interview with L.G. Green or read the highlights  by clicking here.

In a morning meeting of the Hawaii State House Committee on COVID-19, Speaker Scott Saiki he has asked State Department of Health to provide more detailed information about the spread, without names, but things like how many people were at a beach party, how many got COVID-19, and how many of their family members were infected–to give people a good sense of what is causing the community spread.  He said the State Department of Health response was negative.
