State adds 201 new COVID cases, 2 new deaths

The State of Hawaii Department of Health says the state has 201 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total to 3,115.  The number of active cases in the state right now is 1,617.  In a continuing sad development of this COVID-19 pandemic, two more people have died from the disease, bringing the State’s death toll to 31.

Hawaii County added no new cases, with 123 cumulative and 8 active cases right now.  Kaua’i also had no new cases, and has 47 cumulative with 46 released from monitoring and isolation.  Maui County added one new case, bringing that county’s cumulative count to 181, with 145 released from monitoring and isolation.  As has been the case for a month, most new cases are on O’ahu–200 new cases today.  That island has the most population in the state, nearly a million people, and the cumulative case count on O’ahu is 2,741 with around 1,556 active cases.

On Thursday, because of concern over hospital capacity, which Dr. Bruce Anderson of the State Health Department saying the island of O’ahu is on a path to reach or exceed its ICU bed capacity within three weeks if the high case count continues, Gov. David Ige re-imposed the 14-day interisland travel quarantine on travel to neighbor islands.  He also concurred with Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s request to shut down parks, beaches, and most places on O’ahu where large crowds have been gathering, leading to the alarming spread of COVID-19.

The increase in numbers is mostly community spread, but today around 900 visitors arrived in the state.  Although the DOH says it is local people at gatherings responsible for most of the spread, the increase in visitors is causing concern.  On Hawaii Island, Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno says our current 8 cases are travel-related, some mainland travel and some O’ahu travel.
