COVID update: World 19.4M cases, 723K deaths; US 4.9M cases, >161K deaths

The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Saturday, August 8, at 7:34 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 19,451,097    Worldwide deaths: 722,835

U.S. cases: 4,968,413      U.S. deaths: 161,858

According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide cases increased by 278,592 in the last 24 hours.  The worldwide death toll in the past two days increased by 6,508.

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 65,721 cases in the last 24 hours, and reported deaths attributed to COVID-19 have increased by 1,464.

The State of Hawaii has had 3-digit case increases over the past several days, and now, there are more than 1,617 active cases in the state right now, with around 1,556 of them on O’ahu.  Gov. David Ige has reinstated a modified interisland 14-day travel quarantine for anybody traveling to a neighbor island from any other island.  And on O’ahu, parks, beaches, bowling alleys, pools, tennis courts, and more are now closed again because of the need to keep people from gathering in large groups.
