Hawaii Island Food Basket is continuing its work in distributing food around the island. The challenge has grown since the Federal additional unemployment subsidy has stopped, and Executive Director Kristin Frost Albrecht said Food Basket will do all it can to help people who need it.
Anybody who would like to make a donation to Hawaii Island Food Basket via check or cash or credit card may learn more at hawaiifoodbasket.org Sadly, right now, because of the COVID-19 situation, Food Basket is unable to accept direct food donations from the public, but another option for giving is to talk with local grocers about giving money to them to provide food to Hawaii Island Food Basket. Frost Albrecht said several KTA Superstore customers have done just that.
Below is this week’s food distribution schedule. Everybody is asked to stay in their vehicle, with space in the trunk or back seat for volunteers to put the food. It is also wise to bring a cooler in case Food Basket is able to provide frozen or fresh food that needs refrigeration. Food giveaways begin at 10 a.m. and stop at noon as long as the supply holds out. Last Friday, the line for food at Waimea’s District Park stopped before food ran out, so do not hesitate to go to one of these ‘Ohana Food Drops if you are in need–and Frost Albrecht said to remind everybody…”no shame.” Neighbors are here to help neighbors.
