State adds 140–no new Big Island, most on O’ahu

The State’s noon report shows 140 new cases of COVID-19 in the state.  And three more Hawaii citizens have succumbed to COVID-19, bringing the state’s death toll from the virus to 34.  The cumulative number of cases in the state is now 3,638.  There are now 2,038 active cases in the state.

One month ago, on July 10, 2020, Hawaii had 1,158 cumulative cases, with the death toll at only 19.  There were only 292 active cases at the time, statewide.

Hawaii County has no new cases reported today, and 14 active cases out of 131 cumulative.

Kaua’i and Maui County each have one new case.

O’ahu’s case count jumped by 138.  That island has around 1,848 known active cases, and there have been a number of clusters in workplaces and in family units.  Today, City and County of Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell held a press conference and said there are at least 47 cases among city employees, including 10 identified at Honolulu Hale (ie City Hall) and is asking workers to stay home and asking community members to stay away unless they have to make necessary payments.  Caldwell said Premier Medical Group is conducting testing of city employees.

Gov. David Ige has reinstated a 14-day travel quarantine for anybody traveling to a neighbor island, but as of noon on Monday, there are no details on the State Department of Health travel website.  On Sunday, Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said Gov. Ige passed the responsibility to each county to work out details of who can be exempt from the quarantine and for quarantine tracking and he and his team were working on it Sunday and would be today.  As of noon on Monday, the details are not yet posted on the Hawaii County Civil Defense COVID-19 update site.  A mandatory travel form is required for all passengers traveling interisland; that information and the form are here.

One month ago, there were just over 3 million COVID-19 cases in the U.S., and 133,677 deaths.  Today, the U.S. has just over 5 million cases and 163,156 people have died from the novel coronavirus.
