26 new people on Big Island have COVID–117 active; state adds 265

Hawaii has added 265 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total 7,830 cases.  There are 5,361 active cases in the state. And four people with COVID-19 on O’ahu have been added to the state’s death toll, which is now 59.    Fifty O’ahu residents have died, 8 from Maui County, and one from Kaua’i who was out of state.

Kaua’i has no new cases and is holding at 56.  Maui County added 6 since yesterday.  O’ahu has 233 new cases.

Hawaii County has added 26 cases, and now has 279 cumulative and 117 active cases.  Although most have been contracted by people whose residences are in East Hawaii, the State Department of Health says it’s not necessarily where they contracted the virus.  DOH asks everybody to consider that they may have the virus, symptoms or not, and wear a mask or other cloth face covering.   Avoid gatherings, and stay physically distant from others other than household members.

Mayor Harry Kim said on Monday that he is disappointed and concerned about the increased spread of the virus on the island.  The County has contracted Premier Medical Group to do additional testing, including at Prince Kuhio Mall and at Waikoloa School tomorrow from 9 until 1.  All residents are urged to get tested if they have concerns, if they’ve been at a large gathering with unmasked and/or not physically distanced people, have symptoms, or have been in close contact with a known COVID-19 victim, whether they have symptoms or not.

Yesterday Hilo Medical Center had 14 people with COVID-19 in the hospital, 4 in the ICU, 10 in the separate COVID-19 area, all isolated from other patients.  HMC will provide an update early this afternoon, and this story will be updated.
