Blood Bank Hawaii is coming back to the Big Island.
For the first time since March, when the pandemic made traveling a challenge, collection teams will return to Hilo on September 22 through 24. Plans are underway to host a Kona drive in October, though no dates are set yet.
The blood drives will take place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hilo Stake Cultural Hall, with hours of operation as follows:
Tuesday, Sept. 22 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 23 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 24 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Blood Bank Hawaii will also be collecting COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma. In late August, the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the use of blood from those who have had COVID-19 as a possible treatment for the virus. CCP donors need to provide a lab-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in advance, and be healthy and symptom-free for 28 days.
BBH especially is looking for donors with type O blood. Type O-negative blood is the highest in demand because it’s accepted by everyone, and O-positive blood can be used by anyone with a positive blood type – which is about 80% of local residents.
