**updated 6 p.m.: Big Island: 2 new COVID, 16 in hospital. State adds 127

The State Department of Health has confirmed 127 new cases of COVID-19 for the state, bringing the state’s total to 12,018.  There have been 4 new deaths reported today, none from the Big Island. The number of active cases in the state is 1,761, a significant reduction from Friday.

Lt. Gov. Dr. Josh Green said the active cases represent activity over the past 20 days.  He also said there are only 148 people in the hospital, a reduction of about 50% from the peak.  He said the state appears to have turned a corner but urged everybody to continue to practice precautions.

The State DOH included a footnote in today’s report, explaining why the number of active cases has dropped markedly today, by more than 5,000:

“The Department of Health has been focused on redesigning procedures to maximize effectiveness of COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing including making a variety of changes to data systems allowing them to be more automated, and to improve timeliness of data entry and validation. Isolation release data completeness was the focus of recent efforts, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of COVID-19 cases currently reported as released from isolation, from 5,397 to 10126.”

The Big Island has only added 2 cases today, for a cumulative count of 693 cases.  The number of deaths the island has suffered is 28, but the State DOH is only counting 15 of those so far.  The number of active cases on the island is now only 91, with that number being the total number of cases (693) minus those released from isolation (574, 69 newly-released since Friday) minus the actual known deaths (28).

Hilo Medical Center reported it today, as yesterday,  has 15 patients with COVID-19.  Hawaii County Civil Defense reports there are 16 total patients hospitalized.    Civil Defense today would not say which hospital on the island has the 16th patient.   Update:  At 5 p.m., Judy Donovan of Kona Community Hospital confirmed the facility has two patients with COVID-19, one of whom is on a ventilator.
