According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide case report increased by 723,538 in the last 24 hours. Deaths worldwide increased by 12,035.
According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 160,059 cases in the last 24 hours. This is the sixth day in a row the new cases have been greater than 100,000. In the last day, the number of reported deaths from COVID-19 increased by 1,595.
The country had more than 61,000 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday afternoon. That’s the highest count ever. In Hawaii, Hilo Medical Center had 5 people hospitalized — none in the ICU — as of Tuesday afternoon. Kona Community Hospital reported on Monday that it had 5 people hospitalized. Three are in the ICU, and two of those are on ventilators.
The State of Hawaii Department of Health says the state’s count of COVID-19 cases is 16,088. The Big Island’s total case count is 1,413. Hawaii County Civil Defense says the virus on this island is not being brought in by travelers but is spreading within the island resident community.
President-elect Joe Biden has formed a Coronavirus Task Force to address the alarming rise in cases. It is composed of doctors, epidemiologists, and public health experts. Biden says the Task Force is beginning its work now and will be in full operation by January 20, 2021, when he is inaugurated. Meanwhile, the President-elect is urging everybody in the country to wear masks and try to tamp back the wide spread of the virus.
