Flash Flood Warning issued for parts of Hawai’i Island

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning through this afternoon for the County of Hawaii Districts of Hamakua, North and South Hilo, Puna, and Kau.  Heavy rain is forecast through Wednesday.

A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or already occurring.

Due to the Flash Flood Warning, the following are issued:

·        All Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.

·        Heavy rainfall and ponding will cause hazardous driving conditions.

·        The following major roadways are closed: Highway 11 between the 56 and 57 mile markers in Kau.  The Kau District Gym in Pahala is available for travelers while Kawa Flats is closed.  Additional road closures are likely through Wednesday.

·        Do not attempt to cross flowing water in your vehicle or on foot; turn around don’t drown.

·        If lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

The Department of Public Works will have sand available for you to bag your own sandbags at the following locations: in Hilo; the Hilo Baseyard (Shultz-Siding), fronting the Afook-Chinen Auditorium, Alea Cemetary.  In Puna; at Shipman Park, the Puna Baseyard in Kurtistown, and Post Office Road and Highway 130 in Pahoa.  Sand should be available by noon today.
