Governor Ige Withholds Funds for Corrections Oversight

(AP) — Hawaiʻi Gov. David Ige has again decided not to approve funds that would have allowed the all-volunteer Hawaii Correctional Systems Oversight Commission to hire paid staff members. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on Monday that Ige last year declined to release $330,000 in funding for the five-member commission overseeing the state Department of Public Safety so the commission could make hires. The commission was approved by the Legislature two years ago in what was hailed as major corrections reform. But the commission formed in July of 2019 still does not have salaried administrator to lead the group’s work.
