Newly Discovered Fish Species Named After Hawaiʻi Researcher

(AP) — A new species of fish has been discovered during a research study funded by the National Science Foundation and University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program that focuses on deepwater snappers. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday that the new species of deepwater snapper was named Etelis boweni by the research team in recognition of Brian Bowen. He is a research professor from the University of Hawaiʻi who has spent over three decades studying marine fishes. Kim Andrews is the scientist who led the international research team and says the discovery is valuable because the Etelis boweni fish can now be managed differently than their deepwater snapper counterparts.
