Father Pleads No Contest in Daughter’s Starvation Death

(AP) — The father of a 9-year-old Hawaiʻi girl who starved to death has pleaded no contest to manslaughter. The Hawaiʻi Tribune-Herald reports Kevin Lehano’s plea is part of a deal with prosecutors. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced. Lehano, his wife and his mother-in-law were indicted on second-degree murder charges for the 2016 starvation death of Shaelynn Lehano-Stone. A judge sentenced the girl’s mother to 10 years probation last month. The girl’s grandmother has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. The grandmother was the girl’s legal guardian and had pulled her out of school. Police found the girl unconscious in her grandmother’s apartment unconscious on June 28, 2016. She died later that day.
