Hawaiʻi Island D.U.I. Statistics Show an Increase in Arrests

During the week of May 10, 2021, through May 16, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence.  Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.  None of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far in 2021, there have been 477 DUI arrests compared with 327 during the same period in 2020, an increase of 45.9 percent.  There have been 295 major accidents this year compared with 306 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent.

To date, there were 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities for the same time last year.  This represents an increase of 25 percent for fatal crashes, and 25 percent for fatalities.

Island-wide D.U.I. roadblocks and patrols will remain in effect.
