Hawaiʻi County Police Report a Higher Number of D.U.I. Arrests Compared to the Same Time Last Year

During the week of May 24, 2021, through May 30, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.  Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far in 2021, there have been 513 DUI arrests compared with 355 during the same period last year. This is an increase of 44.5 percent.

There have been 328 major accidents so far this year compared with 333 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.5 percent.

To date, there were 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities for the same time last year.  This represents an increase of 37.5 percent for fatal crashes, and 37.5 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
