Hawaiʻi Tourism Officials Call for More Sustainable Industry

(AP) — As people flock back to Hawaiʻi after more than a year of pandemic travel restrictions, some industry experts are calling for more environmentally responsible and sustainable forms of tourism. Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority President and CEO John De Fries says taking care of Hawaiʻi’s communities and land should be a major part of the tourism industry’s business model. University of Hawaiʻi professor Pauline Sheldon says so-called “regenerative tourism” could be a way forward. Tourism officials have been pushing a sustainable agenda in a recent advertising campaign called Malama Hawaiʻi. Malama is a Hawaiian word that means to preserve or protect.
