Online Tool Aims to Inform West Maui of Threatening Waves

(AP) — University of Hawaiʻi researchers have developed an online tool that will inform the public when waves are expected to threaten west Maui shorelines that are particularly prone to coastal erosion as sea levels rise. The Maui News reports the tool can forecast high sea levels and wave effects on 12 shoreline regions up to six days in advance. Researchers say residents may want to use the tool to avoid a coastal highway or certain beaches during a high wave event. The Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System’s Wave Run-Up Forecast was developed by researchers in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.
