Hilo Airport Runway Closed Amid Lighting Failure

(AP) — The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has indefinitely closed one of two runways at the Hilo International Airport after the lights went out. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that department spokesman Jai Cunningham said the runway went dark on Friday. The cause is unknown. Officials have urged travelers to check with their airlines for possible changes. At least one flight was rerouted to Honolulu so far. Cunningham said the other runaway remains operational, but it is shorter and cannot accommodate aircraft used in transpacific flights. The Kona International Airport remains open.
