Puna Man Charged With Multiple Offenses

Hawai’i Island police have charged a 36-year-old Hilo man with Fist Degree Burglary, two counts of Second Degree Assault, Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member, Abuse of a Family or Household Member, Kidnapping, First Degree Terroristic Threatening, Third Degree Promotion of a Dangerous Drug, Fourth Degree Sexual Assault and Interfering with Reporting an Emergency or Crime.

On June 11, 2021, Puna Patrol Officers responded to a report of an unknown disturbance at a residence on 19th Avenue in Kea’au. Officers located a 52-year-old male victim with a laceration to his hand.  The male victim reported being assaulted with a knife.  South Hilo Patrol Officers located and arrested the suspect at a Kapiolani Street address in Hilo.  Following the arrest, a second 25-year-old female victim was identified.  The female victim reported being held against her will and threatened with a knife.

The 52-year-old male victim received treatment at Hilo Medical Center and was later released.

The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Cyrus Malani Tavui of Mountain View. Detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section continued the investigation and after conferral with the Hawai’i County Prosecutor’s Office, charged Tavui with Fist Degree Burglary, two counts of Second Degree Assault, Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member, Abuse of a Family or Household Member, Kidnapping, First Degree Terroristic Threatening, Third Degree Promotion of a Dangerous Drug, Fourth Degree Sexual Assault and Interfering with Reporting an Emergency or Crime. Tavui was held in police custody in lieu of $118,000 total bail. Tavui’s first court appearance was scheduled for Monday, June 14, 2021, in Hilo District Court.
