Hawai’i Eviction Moratorium To End This August

(AP) — A moratorium on evictions for people who fell behind on rent during the coronavirus pandemic expires in early August in Hawai’i. Officials hope federal rent assistance and a new state law encouraging landlords to enter mediation with their tenants will prevent evictions. Even so, some social service agencies are concerned many could wind up homeless when the moratorium expires. Aloha United Way has been training staff who answer its 211 helpline on the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants. They are ready to refer people to mediators and places where they can apply for rental assistance.
