Board Proposed to Take Over Management of Mauna Kea Summit

(AP) — A working group tasked by the state Legislature to come up with recommendations for a new management plan for Hawaiʻi’s tallest peak and its affiliated telescopes has released the first draft of its proposal. The group suggests a new governing entity for the mountain, which is managed by the University of Hawaiʻi. Mauna Kea is the proposed site of what would be the world’s largest optical telescope. Construction of the giant telescope has been blocked by Native Hawaiian opponents who consider the peak to be sacred. The group recommends the eventual decommissioning of all the telescopes that sit atop the mountain and the land restored to its natural state.
