Makea Stream Temporary Bridge Opens to Traffic on January 8

The County of Hawai‘i Department of Public Works announced the completion and opening of the Makea Stream Temporary Bridge, Hurricane Lane Damage Repair project along Kaupakuea Homestead Road, north of Andrade Road.

Beginning Saturday, January 8, the one-lane bridge will be opened to traffic with signals placed on both sides of the bridge to control traffic. The flow of traffic will be two-way alternating / contraflow (only one lane of traffic is permitted over the bridge at a time).

Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to obey traffic control signals, signs, and rules at all times. If the traffic signal(s) is not operational for any reason, access to the bridge must be treated as a two-way stop.

In conjunction with the opening of the bridge, the temporary detour route beginning at approximately mile marker 11.23 on Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19), continuing through the Old Māmalahoa Highway, ‘Ōpua Road, and Lauhulu Road, will be closed to the general public effective January 8.
