Former Honolulu Officials Arrested Over Payout to Convicted Ex-Honolulu Police Chief

(AP) — Three former Honolulu officials have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to hide the source of public funds used to get a police chief to retire amid a corruption investigation. Roy Amemiya, the city’s former managing director; Donna Leong, the city’s former top civil attorney; and Max Sword, who led the Honolulu Police Commission from 2016 to 2018, surrendered to the FBI on Wednesday. Their attorneys entered not guilty pleas for them in court. Prosecutors say they used police department funds to circumvent approval from the City Council, whose members had been questioning the retirement agreement for Louis Kealoha. Kealoha and his wife were later convicted and sentenced to prison.
