U.S. Military to Appeal Hawaiʻi’s Order to Drain Fuel Tanks

(AP) — A top U.S. military official says the Defense Department will appeal Hawaiʻi’s order that it drain fuel from a massive tank farm that leaked petroleum into the Navy’s water system and contaminated Pearl Harbor’s tap water. Even so, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks says the military continues to take actions “consistent with” Hawaiʻi’s order and will meet a deadline to submit a work plan and implementation schedule. Hicks says the department plans to file appeals in both state and federal court by Wednesday. She didn’t specify a precise reason for the appeals, but said they would give the military time to make “evidence-based and transparent decisions.”
