Honolulu Woman Gets 90 Day Jail Sentence in Embassy Documents Case

(AP) — A Honolulu woman must spend 90 days in jail for taking classified documents while working at the U.S. Embassy in Manila. Asia Janay Lavarello pleaded guilty last year to one count of knowingly removing classified information. Prosecutors say classified documents she removed from the embassy were later found in her hotel room, where she was hosting a dinner party. Her attorney, Birney Bervar, says Lavarello apologizes and takes responsibility. Bervar says Lavarello was using the documents to write her thesis while studying at the National Intelligence University. He says she had no malicious intentions.
