Police Warn Public About Paypal Scam

The Hawai‘i County Police Department is warning the public about a recent Paypal scam where embers of the public have reported receiving email with instructions to contact Paypal’s customer service number from the phone number provided to verify a Bitcoin purchase.

The scam states that failure to call to dispute the charge within 24 hours will result in a large monetary charge to the credit card attached to the Paypal account.

Police are encouraging anyone who receives this type of email to contact Paypal directly in order to verify a charge and to not call the number provided in the email. Anyone who has not purchased Bitcoin or does not have a Paypal account can block the sender. Individuals who feel they have been a victim of this scam should call the police department’s non- emergency line at (808) 935-3311.
