The East Hawai’i Cultural Center’s latest exhibition, “After Life,” brings together the work of five Hawai’i-based artists featuring wooden sculptures by Henry Bianchini, Patrick Daniel Sarsfield, Daniel Sheinfeld Rodriguez, Randy Takaki (1952-2016), and Lonny Tomono.
The wood comes from various sources and previous uses: from sugi (Japanese cedar) to mango, from driftwood to plywood. As the exhibition text explains, “Non-utilitarian art, crafted from wood, is made for nothing tangible. Rather, it is a manifestation of the abstract potential of metaphysical vision. ‘After Life’ is an exhibition of the second life of trees, interpreted by sculptors, who, like our ancestors, return to the forest, to take a second look.”
The exhibition will be open from June 4 to July 29; and for the first time since the pandemic, an opening will be held on Friday June 3 at 6 p.m.
