The search for the 14-year-old boy that went missing in waters off Shipman/Haena Beach in Puna last week ended Sunday evening.
The teen remains missing following search efforts done in the water and by air. A missing person case remains open for him.
On Thursday afternoon, the 14-year-old boy, along with his 16-year-old brother, father, and another adult were swept out by the current and high surf.
The 16-year-old and two adults were rescued from the water by an HFD helicopter.
Medics treated the two adults at the scene while the 16 year-old was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for today in addition to a coroner’s inquest investigation that has been initiated
The Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing to investigate the incident.
