HPD Investigating Thefts From Vehicles in Kona

Hawai’i Island police are investigating recent thefts from vehicles occurring at two separate Kona beach parks this week.
On Wednesday, October 5, Kona Patrol officers responded to the Kiholo Bay parking lot for a reported car break-in where officers determined that a rental vehicle was broken into while parked and unattended.  Numerous personal items belonging to out of state visitors, including high priced electronics, were stolen.
The same day, South Kohala Patrol officers met with two Canadian visitors who reported a theft that occurred near Kua Bay.  A 31-year old female visitor said a male wearing a face mask approached her while she was parked in her rental car and demanded her to exit the vehicle.   When she did not comply with his request, the male brandished a firearm and removed a cell phone belonging to her husband.  The male suspect then fled in a vehicle.  The female victim, whose husband was not in the rental car, was not injured during the incident
It is believed that the suspect(s) used a white older model Toyota extra cab pickup truck with no tailgate in both incidents.  The license plate of the truck is unknown.
