2022 County Population Estimates Released

Yesterday, the U.S. Census Bureau released its county-level vintage 2022 population estimates, which contained population data for 2020 to 2022. Final revisions to the 2011 to 2019 intercensal population estimates are not yet available.
Between July 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022 the state population declined at an average rate of 0.4% per year. For the counties, Honolulu County’s population declined at an average rate of 0.8% per year and Maui County’s population decreased at an average rate of 0.1% per year. Hawaiʻi County’s population grew by 1.4% on average per year and Kauai County’s population grew by an average rate of 0.4% per year.
On July 1,2022, Honolulu County accounted for 69.1% of the state’s total population. Hawaii County accounted for 14.3%, Maui County had 11.4% of the state’s population, and Kauai County’s population was 5.1%.
Data in this release also included components of population changes and revisions to previous population estimates for 2020 and 2022 which are all available on our Population Estimates webpage.
