Kealakehe and Konawaena Debate Club Students Head To Court for Learning

Debate Club students from Kealakehe Intermediate School and Konawaena Middle School visited the Keahuolū Courthouse to learn more about the three branches of government, the judicial process, courtroom procedures, as well as employment opportunities within the judicial system.

Judges, attorneys from Prosecutor’s and Public Defender’s offices, social workers from Adult Probation and Drug Court/Veterans Court, as well as Sheriffʻs deputies talked about their jobs and encouraged the students to vote, stay in school. They were also told to consider returning to the Big Island to give back and serve their community if they choose to go out of state for college.

The students gained information and tips to incorporate into their debate team activities, such as the importance of civility, even while disagreeing with one another. They also learned that they can argue their points in a respectful manner.

Teachers are making arrangements to return to court in the fall and, perhaps, bring students from other classes as well.
