Police Investigate Suspected Infant Drowning at Hilo Home

Hawai‘i Island police are investigating the suspected drowning of an 11-month-old girl at a Hilo residence.

Yesterday morning, South Hilo patrol officers responded to the residence after receiving a report of an unresponsive child found in a swimming pool.

Upon arrival, officials learned that the unresponsive infant and her 6-year-old brother were found by their mother in an inflatable pool with water approximately one-foot deep.
Family members began CPR until HFD medics arrived and took over while en route to Hilo Medical Center where life-saving measures continued but were unsuccessful. The infant was later pronounced dead.

Area I Criminal Investigation Division personnel responded to the residence and hospital to assist in the investigation.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone who may have information relative to this incident to contact Detective Zenas Pacheco with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at (808) 961-2384, or via email at zenas.pacheco@hawaiicounty.gov.
