Hawaiʻi County D.U.I. Statistics: October 23-29

During the week of October 23, through October 29, 2023, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 10 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 796 DUI arrests compared with 817 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6 percent.
The Hawai’i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 696 major collisions so far in 2023 year compared with 682 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.1 percent. 

To date, there have been 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 29 fatal crashes, resulting in 31 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one was reclassified to a medical condition) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 51.7 percent for fatal crashes, and 51.6 percent for fatalities.    
 
To date, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) in 2023 is one compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
