Hawaiʻi County D.U.I. Statistics: April 8-14

During the week of April 8 through April 14, 2024, Hawai`i Island police arrested sixteen motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while  one driver was under the age of 21.

So far in 2024, there have been 267 DUI arrests compared with 288 during the same period in 2023, a decrease of 7.3 percent.

The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 289 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 275 during the same time last year, an increase of 5.1 percent.

To date, there were 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths), compared with 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents a 100% increase for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.
