The Hawai‘i County Fire Department (HFD) has begun lifeguard services at Kohanaiki Beach Park.
Today at 3:30pm, HFD will mark the occasion with a traditional Hawaiian blessing and dedication ceremony led by Dr. Holeka Inaba followed by remarks by Fire Chief Kazuo Todd and County officials.
The Kohanaiki lifeguard tower was advocated for by Rachel Able who advocated for enhanced safety at the popular surf spot after her daughter, Lily Able, sustained fatal injuries while surfing at Kohanaiki.
In coordination with the Department of Parks and Recreation and support from the Mayor’s Office, the Fire Department allocated funds from its budget to purchase and construct the tower. Staffing was included in the FY2025 budget, making this the first expansion of lifeguard services under the current administration.
The tower will be staffed daily by HFD Ocean Safety officers.
