Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Announces Temporary Road Closures and Campfire Restrictions Due to Increased Fire Danger

Mauna Loa Road past Kīpukapuaulu and Hilina Pali Road past the Maunaiki Trailhead in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park will temporarily close to vehicles today due elevated fire danger resulting from persistently dry weather.

Pedestrians and non-motorized bicycles are allowed on both roads.

Campgrounds will remain open but campfires and open-flame cooking fires are prohibited at Nāmakanipaio Campground and Kīpukapuaulu day use area. Propane and gas cooking stoves are allowed.

Backcountry hikers with a permit will be provided access to the end of Hilina Pali and Mauna Loa roads.
