Mokuʻola, also known as Coconut Island, in Hilo is closed until further notice following the collapse of a section of the footbridge.
The collapse occurred at about 7:40 a.m. Friday as a mini excavator operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation was crossing the bridge.
A single Parks and Recreation employee was transported by medics to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for assessment.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation, and the public is asked to avoid the area for their safety.
