The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has elevated the alert level for Kīlauea volcano to WARNING, indicating that a hazardous eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected.

In response to the warning, officials have ordered the closure of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Highway 11 is also closed between the 23- and 40-mile markers due to dangerous conditions caused by falling volcanic tephra.

Residents and visitors in the affected areas are urged to seek shelter indoors and avoid travel near the volcano.

An evacuation shelter has been opened at the Kaʻū District / Robert N. Herkes Gym to accommodate those displaced by the closures.

Civil Defense officials say the public will be notified as conditions change and additional information becomes available.

We’ll have updates on air on KWXX, B97/B93 and KPUA as they become available.
