4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Pāhala

Yesterday at 2:23 p.m. HST, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred 7 miles east-northeast of Pāhala at a depth of 20 miles below sea level.
The earthquake, which had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes, is part of the seismic swarm under the Pāhala area, which has been going on since 2019.
Earthquakes in this region have been observed at least as far back as the 1960s (https://www.usgs.gov/news/volcano-watch-why-do-so-many-deep-earthquakes-happen-around-pahala).
No damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected based on the earthquake’s intensity  More than 70 reports of the quake were registered within the first hour (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/dyfi/)
