This morning at 3:31 a.m. HST, a magnitude-4.0 earthquake occurred 4 miles northwest of Volcano, at a depth of 12 miles below sea level.
The earthquake occurred in a region of stress interaction between Mauna Loa and Kīlauea volcanoes; however the earthquake had no apparent impact on either volcano.
No damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected based on the quake’s intensity. Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks. HVO continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
