Island Conversations – Episode #12–The Battle of Kuamo’o — the battle, the music, the preservation with Herb Mahelona and Kamana Beamer

The Battle of Kuamo’o, at Kuamo’o Battlefield just south of Keauhou Bay, inspired composer Herb Mahelona to write an opera and a symphonic suite.  Island Conversations host Sherry Bracken talks with Herb about his inspiration and process, about the battles depicted in the music, and then talks with Dr. Kamana Beamer about the Beamer family’s connection to the battle and their work in preserving the site.  Note, see the opera on Saturday, June 15 at UH Hilo Performing Arts, 7 p.m. — no charge, donations at the door.  Photo is the Kuamo’o Battlefield.

Air Date:  June 9, 2019
